Newquay started life as a small fishing village called Towan Blistra, but changed to Newquay its present name when a new pier or quay was built in the 15th century. Today the beaches, surfing and mild climate attract tourists to the area.
Newquay has the combination of superb sandy beaches and great surfing conditions that make the area popular with all ages. There are a number of major surfing competitions every year. Altogether there are seven miles of sandy beaches in and around the town. Attraction are excellent surfing, 11 beaches, a full range of water sports and after dark its famous nightlife.
Newquay Harbor is tidal and very much a working location for fishing and pleasure boats, it provides a safe location for bathing and enjoying the sights of fishermen going about their every day business. It is also the center for the R.N.L.I. lifeboat station which stages maneuvers every Sunday morning, and is where the local Gig rowers launch their boats. During the summer months, they are out practicing most days and there are frequent competitions arranged.
Towan is the closest beach to the town center and can be very busy in the summer. As it is right next to the harbor entrance, it is very sheltered, it gets little swell. It has a small, sea filled swimming pool.
