Indian was the first make of motorcycle to be mass-produced in the United States beginning in 1901. Although this Indian Four was an appealing choice for fans of four-cylinder cycles, production of this model stopped after a few 1942 models were produced.

After World War II, the company decided not to resume production of four-cylinder motorcycles. It opted to produce smaller models which cost less to manufacture. This was the last four-cylinder motorcycle made in America.

Although Indian discontinued production in America in 1953, the name lived on for some years. It was used in the '50s and '60s on AJS and Royal Enfield bikes built in England. However, by the mid-1960s, mototcycles bearing the name Indian were no longer produced.
